Free Drop-in Center: Love Letter Writing
5:30 pm to 8 pm
This drop-in experience will allow visitors to craft their own love letters. Inspired by the found love letter in 97 Orchard and the Love at the Tenement tour, visitors will have supplies to pen their own expressions of familial, platonic, and romantic love. And we’ll promise to mail the letters.

Life and Death at the Tenement

Stories featured will include those of Romanian immigrant Jacob Burinescu, who died during the 1918 influenza pandemic, German-born John and Caroline Schneider, who operated a mid-19th-century beer saloon while suffering from TB, and Jose Santiago “Benny” Beniquez and Crispin Ramos a Puerto Rican migrant couple who lived with HIV during the 1980s. This tour is part of the Wellcome Trust’s Contagious Cities project www.wellcome.ac.uk/contagiouscities.

Tasting at the Tenement
6:30 pm to 8 pm
Taste a variety of foods from the neighborhood while exploring the influence of immigrant culture on what all Americans eat. Your group starts with a visit to 97 Orchard Street and continues with a sit-down tasting meal in our private dining room overlooking Delancey Street. As the group tastes the flavors of the Lower East Side past and present, they share stories about their most memorable culinary experiences and watch interviews of local store owners who sold us the foods we'll be eating.
