Life and Death at the Tenement

6:30 pm to 8 pm

This tour visits both of our tenement buildings, linking themes of disease, medicine, immigration and reform in the lives of their former residents. Stories featured will include those of Romanian immigrant Jacob Burinescu, who died during the 1918 influenza pandemic, German-born John and Caroline Schneider, who operated a mid-19th-century beer saloon while suffering from TB, and Jose Santiago “Benny” Beniquez and Crispin Ramos a Puerto Rican migrant couple who lived with HIV during the 1980s. This tour is part of the Wellcome Trust’s Contagious Cities project www.wellcome.ac.uk/contagiouscities.

Tenement Bedrooms

6:15 pm to 7:45 pm

Tour our historic tenement and explore the most private and intimate space of a home: the bedroom. From childbirth to nursing, consider how women carved out space for privacy in their overcrowded tenements. Who was more likely to call a midwife or a doctor for childbirth? What types of birth control did women have access to in the late nineteenth century? Which former tenant of 97 Orchard investigated prostitution? See how ideas around women’s health and women’s bodies changed over time and how that impacted the immigrant families of the Lower East Side.
