Music, dance, Yiddish and Chinese language lessons, crafts, folk art demos, a Chinese tea ceremony, and delicious kosher egg rolls and egg creams give a taste of the traditions and art forms of the East European Jewish and Chinese communities.
Make Your Own Egg Cream
½ cup very cold whole milk
¼ cup Fox’s U-bet chocolate syrup
Soda water (seltzer)
Place milk and chocolate in a large (16 ounce) glass (ideally one that is slightly larger at its top). Stir well, then top off the glass with soda water. Serve immediately with a long spoon and straw.

Eldridge Receives Gold Award for Interactive Installation
|
Our new History Tables received the Gold MUSE Award for Interactive Installation from the American Association of Museums. Located within our Limud Discovery Center, the tables blend technology and traditional materials to immerse visitors in immigrant life of 100 years ago and introduce sacred Jewish architecture and ritual to visitors. According to the MUSE judges, the tables “provides visitors with dramatic, fun experiences that promote an appreciation of the built environment and historical context of the museum and surrounding neighborhood.”
Try out the tables yourself! Visit the Museum Sunday through Thursday from 10am to 4pm.

Calendar: Drum Fest

Usher in the summer with a concert by award-winning drummers Bobby Sanabria, David Licht, Ann Colliton and Xiao Xiannian. This diverse group of musicians will perform and share insights about the rich cultural diversity of our Lower East Side neighborhood with a concert of klezmer, Irish, Chinese and Puerto Rican drumming.

So reported an 1893 article in the New York Daily Tribune. On the Lower East Side, divergent ideologies were an inescapable part of daily life, evident on stoops, atop soapboxes and from within the many synagogues. Join historian Annie Polland on Sunday, June 22 at 1 PM for a walking tour exploring the rich social politics of this iconic New York neighborhood.
