The Tenement Museum is currently looking for people to fill the following positions:
Director of Major Gifts and Board Development
Volunteer Educator
The Museum seeks a Director of Major Gifts and Board Development to oversee a $2.5 million annual campaign and complete capital fundraising related to a recently acquired building. The position reports to the President, and supervises the Membership Coordinator and Special Events Coordinator. She/he serves with the Director of Institutional Giving as the Development Department leadership team. She/he must have at least five years of experience in fundraising from individuals at the $5K level and well-beyond and significant experience managing staff.
The Director of Major Gifts and Board Development is responsible for:
- Achieving annual and capital fundraising goals for sectors (Major Gifts, Board of Trustees, Members, and Special Events); monitoring staff progress in attaining yearly fundraising goals; and assisting staff in attaining their goals
- Working with the President to build Board of Trustees membership and to develop potential board members and groom board members for the future
- Creating strategies for asks, conducting prospect research, writing proposals, meeting with funders, arranging prep. meetings, and following up with all donors in his/her category
- Expanding the base of individual support while stewarding and expanding relations with current individual funders
- Working with the Membership Coordinator to ensure accuracy of all fundraising data entry and maintenance of all sectors files
- Supervising the Special Events Coordinator on all fundraising events, helping him/her to determine strategy and thematic plans for events, and managing all of the details including invitation design, staffing plans, vendor payments, etc
- Attending all Museum fundraising events; acting as staff spokesperson as needed
- Making key decisions regarding approaches to prospects, commemorative giving opportunities, policies, and other issues related to the capital campaign and annual fund
- Coordinating with the President’s Executive Assistant on materials and matters related to the Museum’s Trustees
- Giving weekly public tours
Qualifications:
- At least five years of experience in major individual fundraising;
- Demonstrated success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with major individual donors;
- Experience supervising successful fundraising and cultivation events;
- Significant experience managing staff;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and successfully implement fundraising strategies;
- Very detail-orientated with impeccable oral and written communications skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment;
- Must be self-motivated and be able to initiate ideas and projects;
- A deep commitment to the goals of the organization.

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is seeking energetic volunteers to lead educational tours of the historic landmark tenement building at 97 Orchard Street. Tours of the museum are hour-long programs that visit restored, interpreted apartments that tell the inspiring stories of the immigrant families that once inhabited 97 Orchard Street. While leading tours, volunteers will invite visitors to engage challenging questions and relate historical and contemporary experiences.
Volunteer educators are supervised by the Education Coordinator. They must be available at least one day a week to lead tours of the Tenement Museum. Volunteers are required to learn at least one tour, but are encouraged to learn additional programs as they become more experienced. Volunteers are also encouraged to attend monthly training meetings to further develop their skills and knowledge base.
Candidates should:
- Have strong communication skills.
- Feel comfortable speaking in front of groups and generating visitor participation.
- Be articulate, enthusiastic, and engaging.
- Demonstrate a desire and willingness to conduct programs that engage visitors of diverse backgrounds in exploring challenging issues.
- Be interested in the history of immigration and contemporary immigration-related issues.
Preference will be given to candidates who:
- Have at least a high school diploma or GED or relevant experience.
- Can demonstrate the ability to retain information quickly and effectively.
- Are bilingual in English and Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
