For over 100 years, immigrants poured into New York from around the world and, more often than not, ended up on the Lower East Side. Starting on the street, hawking their goods, many persevered and became successful businessmen and women.
One classic example of that tradition is Altman’s Luggage.
For over 80 years, the Bettinger family has been in the luggage business and always on the Lower East Side. Sender Bettinger, originally from Lithuania, started with a pushcart, traveling up and down the East Side selling his wares until he opened his store on Orchard Street.
His son Louis took over eventually and now, his son Dan runs the business. And while Sender may have restricted himself to bags and luggage, Dan now includes all sorts of travel related items like books, pens, briefcases, clocks and wallets.
With the holiday season just around the corner, Altman’s newly renovated store is a great place to stock up on gifts or gear up for a family trip!
