The weekend volunteer will introduce Museum visitors to life in a Lower East Side tenement, the Sephardic community, and the challenges of adjusting to a new culture. The weekend volunteer will prepare visitors to take on the role of a newly arrived immigrant family in the year 1916 and to visit the recreated tenement apartment of Victoria Confino, a former resident of the historic landmark building.
The Confino program is set in the year 1916, when Victoria Confino had been living in the United States for three years. She was a Sephardic Jew from Kastoria, in the former Ottoman Empire, whose native language was Ladino. The Museum visitors participating in the Confino Family program take on the role of a newly arrived immigrant family in the year 1916, and Victoria shares her knowledge and experiences with them.
